Much like the classic Dickens novel Northbrook Country Club in Luxemburg features a tale of two nines. Not that one side is better, or the other any worse, but both sides have a distinctive feel at this picturesque northeast Wisconsin location rated 4.5 stars by a little known company called Golf Digest.

The front nine is longer yet more forgiving and hacker-friendly, while the back will test your mettle on almost every hole. That's not to say even the mediocre won't do well at this course, because there are plenty of chances to put up good numbers. Just be sure to step your game up before you make the turn.

The Par 5 9th is where things start to get interesting, as you have a short water carry and a second shot which could easily wind up in a fairway-covering bunker on your way uphill to the green. Then you make the turn, and No. 10 will likely set the tone for your entire back side. If you are not long and keep the ball to the right side of the fairway off the tee, this Par 4 becomes a Par 5 in a hurry. The tee shot will either leave a layup or a daunting uphill approach over a ravine to an elevated green which is protected by woods and sand - a very tough test indeed. If you can navigate No. 10 successfully, you get a breather with a straight-forward Par 3 at 11 and the rest of the back can be smooth sailing if you're accurate off the tee.

Whether your round is going well or not, you should enjoy the well-groomed fairways and immaculate bunkers, as well as the natural beauty of the course - you usually see some wild turkeys around 13 and 14. When you arrive, the clubhouse might not 'wow' you, but the main building and practice facilities are well-maintained, easy to navigate and offer everything you need for an afternoon away from the wife/husband and kids.

There are plenty of reasonably priced food and drink options with a lower-level snack bar and the upstairs full-service restaurant (which features a very popular all-you-can-eat crab leg special on Fridays). While you're on the course the beverage cart sightings are frequent, so players can get their beer, err chocolate milk, fix.

All-in-all Northbrook provides great value for your golf dollar and the course runs plenty of golf and food promotions. Give this course a shot (or 90), you won't be disappointed.
