Head East on Highway and just across the Stillwater Bridge is a gem of a course and one we really felt at home at. Fifteen minutes from Stillwater is about all you will need as far as a time investment to visit this, closer than you think, location.

Family run by a jack-of-all-trades owner, this course just feels good as you play it. Lots of variations in holes, scenic views, and a quiet, quiet atmosphere, made for a really nice, early spring outing. Even though we played in mid-April, the course was in fine shape and again, just felt like a good match for the “hacker”.

We were one of the first groups off the tee on this midweek day, and there was actually a bit of frost on the course as we arrived.  The course was wide open and our round went quickly and smoothly and oftentimes we were the only golfers in sight on the course. As we finished our round and the temperatures had warmed, the course became busier, but still appeared to offer a relaxing pace of play.
The course meets all your needs and is full-service. Nothing pretentious or stuffy here, with a friendly staff and nice clubhouse stocked with the essentials at competitive prices.

On the course the terrain is rolling and varied, the greens offered just enough challenge without being a constant source of frustration. Rough was mowed to a good length, and trees bottom limbs were trimmed so you did not have to make a wild whack because of an errant shot’s lie. That’s a very hacker -friendly attribute, and one other courses should employ. There is water, trees and sand traps on the course but most add to the overall appeal of the course, rather than being a hindrance to the hacker’s round. Trouble is there, but can for the most part be avoided relatively easily.

There are 3 sets of tee boxes, carts available, a USGTF professional on Staff, and also according to their website, an on-staff club repair person.  We played from the white tees at around 6300 yards, and this seemed neither too short nor too long for the average player. The course has a fairly comprehensive junior program, which was nice to see.

This is not a country club, nor does it appear it wants to be. What it lacks in flash, it makes up for in making sure you can spend a day here, knowing you will be playing a fair course, at a fair price, with full service food and beverage, and have a good time doing it. Check for course specials as they consistently run ads for you to take advantage of and make your investment an even better deal.

Bristol Ridge Golf Course in Somerset, Wisconsin, is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course with a full-service clubhouse, pro shop, bar and complete dining facility. We arrived at the course early (well before opening at 7 am), and we decided to walk (since no one was there that early to give us a cart). The groundskeeper joined us after we teed off at the first hole and informed us we were too early. We assured him that we would wait for the mowers to finish, and we were okay to go. The mowers at the first hole got out of our way and let us know that getting ahead of them would work out. Everyone went out of their way let us play.

The tree-lined fairways follow the natural contours of the land and are well-kept. There are several water hazards and sand traps, and the rough is reasonable (except for the heavy woods lining most fairways). The tee boxes are in good shape, and most if not all have ball washers and benches. The greens are smooth, fast and rolling. Water and portable bathrooms are conveniently available.

There are several interesting (tricky) holes at Bristol Ridge. The 1st hole, a par 5, requires a drive over water, up a hill, around a corner and down to the green. The 2nd hole requires a drive over a hill and between trees on both sides of the fairway, then up a hill to the green. The 4th hole, a par 3, is 170 yards over water and swamp. The 11th hole is short, but water surrounds the green on three sides. In short, most of the holes are hardly straightforward.

After the rounds we talked with the manager and one of the members, who are proud of their course and were happy that we enjoyed playing it. This is an interesting, tough and challenging course. The quality of the experience was high and the reasonable price makes it a good value. It is a walkable course, even though it is hilly-a cart might improve the experience. We will surely play it again!
