The Alpine Resort Golf Course in Egg Harbor has evolved significantly since opening its original nine holes in the 1920s. Additions in 1948, 1976 and as recently as 2004 have resulted in a 36 hole layout that ranges from flat, open fairways to substantial elevation changes and scenic vistas.

The Blue and Black course, the newer of the 18-hole courses, is more popular than its sister course - the Red and White - and for good reason. A natural bluff runs through the Blue and Black course and adds to its appeal. The layout is a combination of holes below and in the shadows of the bluff as well as holes on top of the bluff. Some have narrow, tree-lined fairways while others feature more open, generous landing areas. But the crown jewel is no. 9 on the Blue nine. Featured in several prominent golf publications for its sheer beauty, Alpine describes it as "the most scenic hole in Wisconsin." Views of Green Bay from the elevated tee are exceptional - have your camera ready! The hole measures 275 yards, but the 100 foot drop from tee to green makes it play closer to 220 yards - very reachable if you can hit it straight. Wayward shots will, however, end up in the trees on either side of the narrow fairway. Hole 9 on the Black nine is similar - the 98 yard posted distance plays more like 60 when the drop in elevation is factored in.

Plan to take a cart - getting up and down the bluffs on foot would be a real challenge. In fact, carts are mandatory on the Black nine. We were disappointed in the lack of directional signage on some of the holes. We crossed several roads and residential streets between holes, and a few more signs would have alleviated some of the doubt we had about where to go next. On-course beverage service was frequent and efficient, but we thought a bit pricey. A Bloody Mary and a can of beer ran us $10 - before tip.

The staff was very professional and eager to help us in any way they could. The clubhouse facilities were somewhat dated yet had a relaxing, welcoming feel to them, the kind of place you'd enjoy hanging around in after your round is complete. If you're planning a Door County trip, include the Alpine Resort in your golf itinerary.
