Hidden back in the bluffs near Volga River State Park is Fayette's only golf course, Big Rock Country Club. This "casual place to visit" is not only for the locals but gives Upper Iowa University students a chance for free golf. You won't ever feel bored playing this course. The spectacular views and scenery is amazing.

With just over 6000 yards from the tips you get an old experience and a new experience. The front nine lies around the river, which is extremely scenic with large trees. One tee box can be overlooking a dramatic drop to the fairway while viewing the bluffs or your approach shots can be straight uphill. On a handful of greens on the front nine you literally can see for miles.

The back nine was added to the country club in 2002 and has quite a unique layout. Some fairways are on the side of hills, while others have more remarkable views.

Hole number 5 on the front nine is a popular 90 degree dog-leg right. The river runs along the left hand side with heavy timber. The right side of the fairway runs 200 yards with more heavy timber. Big hitters can clear most of the trees and cut the corner of the dog-leg which leaves the next shot to the green around 100-150 yards.

The back nine consists of a few signature holes either surrounded by water or more trees but number 16 can play the most dangerous. The drive from the tee needs to be perfectly straight and land 230 yards out. A mid-iron shot to the green is literally straight down a hill to the green.

Play on the course isn't as challenging as other courses but the scenery and elevated tee-boxes, greens and approach shots make for a enjoyable round. Most greens are pretty fair but a few on the front nine are extremely challenging just to keep your ball on putting surface because of the smaller size and shape.

The clubhouse atmosphere gives a small town feeling to it with great food. Big Rock Country Clubs ground crew and staff are extremely welcoming willing to make your experience a good one.
