Set in northwestern Wisconsin, this golf course offers a challenge to all skill levels. It consists of a number of natural hazards to throw any golfer off their game. The course can be enjoyed by walking or riding as it is not hilly. It is covered with a variety of oak, pine and other northwood trees that provide much needed shade on warmer days. Thick woods parallel each fairway so if an errant shot is hit off the fairway, it is likely that the golfer will not be able to find it. A sizeable inventory of golf balls is recommended should the golfer not be straight on their drives.

The greens are quick and the pin placements are varied. Pay particular attention to the pin locations before teeing off or approaching the green. Take a walk or drive up the fairway to really understand the layout of the fairway. (Or just hit the ball.) The scorecard has detailed information about each hole which advises the golfer on the type of shot that should be taken. Each hole has a name after something unique about the course and this area.

Playing from the back tees is just over 6,300 yards. The back tees, however, do not have a lot of space to set up a tee shot. There are a limited number of fairway bunkers with most of the sand traps located around or near each green. Many of the greens are of a smaller variety making it even more difficult to get the ball to "bite." The course seems to have been built on sand and so the golfer will hear a hollow sound at the tee boxes, on the fairways and definitely on the greens.

There is no beverage service on the golf course but the clubhouse has a snack bar and a friendly staff to assist you. The pro shop is limited in golf course apparel and accessories. As mentioned, come prepared with a good inventory of golf balls.

Black Bear is a course to play while vacationing in northwestern Wisconsin. You know you are "up north" because there is limited residential development around the golf course. Give it a try; it will be a fun and challenging round!
