Their website's boast that they're the best golfing value in the Lakes Area is more than marketing. From this group's eyes, it is a true statement. With the green fee starting at $25 (weekday), golfing at Crosswoods Golf Course in Crosslake, Minnesota, is one of the best deals in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

Conveniently located at the edge of Cross Lake, Crosswoods is an easy 2 ½-hour drive from the Metro area, or 20 minutes north of Brainerd. The signage to get there is easy to follow. The pro shop sells top-of-the-line golf equipment, and they even price match any big-box retailers for that year’s merchandise.

The Crosswoods Grill, new in 2008, has plenty of seating area both inside (with flat-panel TVs and a fireplace) and outside (overlooking the waterfall garden and the golf course). They have an extensive menu of burgers, sandwiches and hot dogs, and the bar offers soft drinks, beer, wine and setups. The prices in the restaurant are reasonable. Besides a driving range and putting green, Crosswoods has a nice 18-hole pitch and putt to warm up on before you play your round. But wait until you see the beautiful course! It’s cut from the native woods, giving it a secluded, natural setting. There are plenty of trees to get you into trouble, but the fairways are wide enough so that even a hacker can score well.

The tee boxes are in great shape and offer five different tees for differing abilities. It isn’t a long course (just over 6100 from the tips), but it is challenging enough. Don’t fly by the 6th hole—it was featured by Minnesota Golfer Magazine as a “hidden gem.” The fairways are perfectly cut and in great shape. The greens are perfect for resort golf: relatively flat, large and cut a little long. The scenery is great. You have some water, a few bunkers and lots of trees. You hardly ever see golfers on the next hole. We decided that this course is one of the best values we’ve ever played, and we’d recommend it as much as any of the other courses we enjoy playing.
