Mississippi National in Red Wing, Minnesota, is a huge 36-hole facility consisting of The Lowlands and The Highlands. They offer everything a private club would have at a non-private price. The Highlands at Mississippi National is situated above the Mississippi River Valley and has some great views of Red Wing and the valley.

Mississippi National does a pretty good job of maintain- ing their courses. Tee boxes, fairways and greens are in very playable condi- tion. But there are areas that could use a little attention-most greens have numerous unrepaired pitch marks. But overall, the course is fairly nice.

The Highlands is an interesting course. It's not a terribly difficult as evidenced by the 117-slope rating, even though we believe it plays a little harder than that. It has a good mix of holes but maybe too many gimmick holes, like #13. It's a seemingly simple 84-yard par 3 with an elevated tee box and severe trouble long and right. The view above Red Wing and the river valley is fantas- tic. Other than that, what's the point of an 84-yard hole on a regulation-size golf course?

The Highlands also has too many tricky holes, such as #15-a 308-yard par 4 with a severe dogleg right. One would think that the proper play would be
to set up to the 100-yard marker-until you get to your ball at exactly the 100-yard marker and find yourself blocked from the green by fairly tall trees. And when your wedge does go over the initial blockade, look out for the hid- den tree right next to the green; it catches and throws your perfect approach shot into the bunker. Mississippi National would do itself-and us hackers-a favor if it got some detailed GPS on their carts. Based on the amount of hills and the great distances between some holes, The Highlands pretty much demands you take a cart. Based on observations, Mississippi National is the locals' favorite. But if you're just interested in quality golf, there are better choices nearby at a cheaper price.

Yes some gimmicky holes like it says but the views are amazing. I don't know were in southern minnesota that you could play a cooler 18 holes for $48 riding. Everyone needs to play this at least once.
