The Jewel, located in Lake City, Minnesota, is a matrimonial symbol of the bond between the bluffs and the Mississippi, between links-style golf and all-terrain play. Originally intended as a private golf club community, with no expense spared, the course is now open to the public and available for anyone who wants the sternest test in southeast Minnesota.

If you’ve ever played an immaculate private course by invitation and wished you could play it whenever you wanted without having to “know someone” or pay for an annual membership, this is the course for you. The service should be the best and it is. If this course were in the Brainerd area, the green fee would be double.

Golfers are permitted to play the course without cart, but for those who aren’t also marathon runners, it’s not the brightest idea. And the championship tees should be considered for show by anyone with a 10+ handicap—don’t even think about it. Also, if you haven’t heard the term before, you’ll know it after a round here: fescue grass. It eats golf balls. Seriously.

The Jewel is groomed daily like a PGA Tour course. The bunkers are strategically placed to make you calculate every single shot and regret those you didn’t. Hole #3 is the signature hole of the front, a true test of 2nd shot accuracy. The course gets easier on holes 5–7. Hole #10 is the Jewel’s jewel. Water really only comes into play twice on the course. Some holes will tempt you to quit early, but hang in there. Every hole is different, catering to every level of golfer in a different way. You’ll use every club in your bag and maybe even buy another putter at the turn. To enjoy the full experience, play the tees that are an accurate description of your game. This is not the course to think you’re better than you actually are. Final words of advice. If you decide to play here, make sure someone in your group buys the $5 yardage book. It will likely save you at least that in golf balls.

Tell the GM Cody Buck you read about the Jewel in The Hacker's Guide... and tell him we sent you there. He's a great guy who really cares about his course, and the golf pro (Kent) is awesome as well. Always willing to help you out any way they can. It's a remarkable course and great place to spend a day!
