Indonesia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports has proposed a significant revision to its national badminton squad for the 2025 SEA Games, confirming that prominent players Jonatan Christie, Fajar Alfian, and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri will not participate in the upcoming tournament in Laos.
Squad Revamp for Medal Ambitions and Talent Nurturing
The decision to alter the lineup stems from a desire to balance the development of emerging talent with Indonesia’s strong medal aspirations. According to Surono, Deputy for Sports Performance Development, the move aims to include more high-performing athletes in the team.
“Our badminton team has shown significant progress. For the SEA Games 2025, we are aiming to strengthen our lineup by including more of the best-performing athletes,” Surono stated during a press briefing in Jakarta.
Strategic Adjustments Amidst Regional Competition
Initially, Indonesia considered sending a younger contingent. However, following discussions between the Review Committee and the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI), a consensus was reached to reconsider the roster, especially in light of neighboring countries like Malaysia and Thailand planning to field their strongest teams.
“Malaysia and Thailand are sending their top players, so we’ve agreed to make several player adjustments. The best available players should represent Indonesia,” Surono explained. The ministry has officially submitted a proposal for these lineup changes to PBSI. If approved, the ministry will collaborate with the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) and the SEA Games organizing committee to finalize the updated athlete registration.
“We are now in the process of submitting the technical adjustments from PBSI to KOI. Our team will ensure all administrative steps are completed properly,” Surono added.
Emerging Talent Set to Shine
Previously, PBSI had announced a 20-player squad for the SEA Games, consisting of 10 men and 10 women. While largely featuring younger players, the contingent includes notable rising stars.
In men’s singles, Alwi Farhan is highlighted as Indonesia’s top-ranked player within the national team. The mixed doubles category will see representation from the promising pair Jafar Hidayatullah and Felisha Pasaribu. For women’s singles, Putri Kusuma Wardani, the current Indonesian No. 1 and a bronze medalist at the 2025 World Championships, will lead the charge.
The men’s doubles discipline will rely on the experienced partnership of Leo Rolly Carnando and Bagas Maulana, who are expected to spearhead Indonesia’s pursuit of a gold medal in that category.
